'I've just seen a hawk try and catch a
Kingfisher.' Gerry was excited.
But as the others struggled to catch up with
her they found it difficult to be enthusiastic
at this time of the morning, on holiday. When
she had suggested it, they were all keen to
go and watch turtles hatch, until she
announced 'We'll meet by the car at 06.00.'
But by then it was too late they were
committed.
'W-well did it succeed? Dick was the first
to catch his breath.
'No I scared it away and the Kingfisher flew
off, I didn't know they lived by salt water.'
The others found it difficult to be as
excited, they hadn't seen it.

They rounded the point as dawn broke. Strangely enough there was no one else about, they stopped
to take photos and then
trudged on through the soft sand. Around the point was a lot of washed up seaweed and the sandy
gravel was even harder going
on Mounda Bay.
The trudged down past the Mounda Bay Hotel and still no sign of the turtle watch crew. At the
environmental centre in Katelios
they had said they would be along about 07.00 but there was no sign of them.

07.43 It was inevitable, the girl from the turtle watch stood by a triangle of three sticks and expounded. 'This is the only nest hatching at the moment, there were lots coming out last night but there doesn't seem to be any this morning.'Surprise surprise thought Dick it was the story of their life. 'If only you had been here yesterday.''If we wait are we likely to see any.' Anne we still keen to see hatchlings. The boys were looking at their watches, they did not want to miss breakfast.'Well if you put your ear to the sand you can hear if any are hatching.'All the way home Gerry kept rubbing her ear saying. 'I think I've got sand in it.'The boys did not look at all surprised. But did they see any turtles?
